Engagement ring tradition
Engagement tradition states that the man should save to purchase a ring he can be proud of and present it to his loved one at the same time as he asks her if she will marry him. Traditionally the man should be on one knee while asking this. A modern tradition is that the ring should be a diamond and the often quoted phrase of "it should cost two months salary" dicates a guideline for the price. To summarise the man will go down on one knee and ask his bride to be if she will marry him while presenting the engagement ring to her.
